"Personal Life" Season Almost Over

Coming out of March marks the end of a crazy time of year for me and marks the beginning of some massive blocks of training.  The year planned is both amazing and daunting.  Three bachelor parties, two weddings, volunteer events, family reunions, work responsibilities and of course a schedule stock full of races that I somehow have to get ready for.

Fortunately both my friends and loved ones are very supportive of the goals for 2011 and I am doing my best to be present both physically and mentally.  With just Tri For the Cure - AZ, and my friends Bill and Anne's wedding left before Oceanside, I'll finally have some breathing room for the smashing my coach has planned for me to get ready for the final push for IM Texas.

Its crazy the things you do to try to get your workouts in and remove some of the training anxiety that comes with both inactivity and guilt for missing a session.  Sometimes it wasn't quite the best idea, such as my hangover run through the strip.

That hurt a bit.  Instant headache.
I am a bit amazed that the body can absorb most of this punishment, and with a little rest, keep up with the training demands.  There is a limit though, and I think I have approached it and pulled back enough to keep from getting ill.  My friends are slowly coming to realize the changes in my priorities and lifestyle, and there isn't enough I can do to thank them for that.  While my former self comes out to play sometimes, he is now content to save those nights for very special occasions.

As for my next two months, it is going to be a test both physically and mentally.  Oceanside, Wildflower and the IM Texas to top it off.  No more shirking swim practice, Aquatic Park is my friend.  With the longer days, come longer training.  Here's to crushing it for the next two months!

Below are the guys responsible for my lack of training, ha!

Performance Tracking for 2011

You can see my goals for 2011 from my past posts, but I have been wrestling with a good way to track my progress in training to make sure what I'm doing is helping.  One of the hardest things is to keep a manageable record of what an athlete is doing, that can translate into tangible evidence of improvement.  One of the greatest things an athlete can have going into a race is a sense of confidence that what they did in training has helped them prepare for race day.  My buddy Dan came up with idea in general and I've workout on my own tracking to fit my training.

In finding my data points to monitor, I also didn't want to interfere with my normal training, so in setting my record points, I picked the ones that were most logical, and wouldn't require a major change in training schedules.

#1 - 1 hours cycling wattage:  This can be done in any of the 2-3 classes I take at M2 Revolution.  The total average of the class is taken into account, including warm-up, and rest periods in between intervals.  A 10 minute treadmill run is completed before jumping on the bike.  Noting the 5-Sec Max wattage as well to see if the squats I am doing are helping overall strength.  The goal is to see my watt/kg ratio improve, not necessarily total watts improve.

#2 - 20 Minute Treadmill run distance:  As a normal warmup to many cycling classes I run for 20 minutes.  5 minute warm-up and 15 minute increasing pace to 20 minutes.  Will track total distance.

#3 - 1 Mile Open Water Swim:  I have 2-3 swims a week and I try to swim in Aquatic Park as often as I can.  In cramming this workout in before spin on most occasions, there is limited time after work, so I push myself to get three buoy laps in (approx. 1 mile).

#4 - Weight: As with anything, speed should go up with reduced weight, but there is a floor to this improvement.  Last year I got sick when I hit 180 pounds, so I want to track this very closely to see if performance drops off as I get closer to it, and if that is my ideal race weight.  I've probably been having too much fun with my new toy doing this.

You can see a worksheet I made here to track all these metrics.

Training for events is a hectic thing to do.  Monitoring progress is a great way to keep yourself on track with training.  Hopefully creating my benchmarks in my normal training schedule will keep interruptions to a minimum, while allowing me the insight to change workouts accordingly along the way.

Matt Davis to West Point with some snow!

View from West Point.
This area up on Mt. Tam is a favorite of mine ever since my coach brought my training group here last year. M2 was off coaching his son in baseball, so I got to lead our group around Mt. Tam for some wonderful views and some snow thanks to a winter storm that left 6 inches of snow on the peaks around the bay on Saturday.

Getting up to Mt. Home in Sunday morning, and it was a bit chilly, but the sun was out, and we were all excited to see the snow. A ton of other people were out hiking up to the snow as well. You could only access Mt. Tam by hiking on Sunday as well, as the Park Service had the roads closed due to ice! Good day to get some exercise for everyone.

The route was planned to have some fun on Matt Davis Trail, all the way to a great lookout point over Stinson Beach. You could then return the way you came for 8.5 to 9 miles, or add a bit of climbing to West Point, and get back to the parking lot for 11. Here's my Garmin maps, but I added a West Point repeat on the end, since I have my IM in three months for Texas, the rest of the group is doing late season races like Canada.
Mt. Home Inn to Pantoll via Matt Davis, then return through West Point on Old Stage Road, and back to Mt. Home inn on Old Railroad Grade.

3,800 feet of climbing!
We had a fun group out today and here are some pics with everyone's smiling faces to get out in the cold, but sunny holiday weekend.

Un-Super Sunday and Kaiser Half Marathon!

Well, my beloved Steelers couldn't pull it out in the Super Bowl, but that was at the end of an amazing weekend and incredible race day.  I couldn't have asked for much more from my team at the beginning of the season, so we'll have to wait six months to get excited for them again.

Off to Kaiser now.  This is the race that I have told myself I have to do every year now since the start is a half mile from my apartment.  It is a great measure of early season fitness too and I was feeling good about how I could perform!  Not only that, I had to make sure my buddy Dan wouldn't beat me with all the smack he was laying down this week.

Race morning and I'm out the door at 5:50 am to my coffee shop Javaholics and then to packet pickup to get my bib.  It was already 60 degrees out on February 6th!  Might be a long day, but heat never really effected me so just drank a little more water with nuun.  Still a little full from dinner the night before, so half a bagel with my coffee, relax back at my apartment watching the morning news then back out the door for a 20 minute warmup.
I'm in there with my Grey SF Tri Visor three deep just behind the yellow shirt guy.  On another note, if you wear yellow to a race, you'd better win.
Ran into a few friends during warm-ups and got situated three from the front to make sure I didn't get trapped and railroaded.  After an extended intro and feel good stores from the announcer, the race was ready to go and the gun fired!

Cruising out of the park on a gentle uphill, trying to hold back in the first few miles with my friends Mark, Brooke and Adam, we get out to the Panhandle of Golden Gate Park and our first slight downhill, and open up my stride while still holding back a bit.

Making the turn on the Panhandle and its a slight uphill again, but this time, all the lightweights decide to take advantage and hold pace, while another 6'5" guy and me are left in their wake for a bit, but once we crest the hill and head back into the park its a 2.5 mile downhill, and we make up time and get back to the pack.
342 feet of elevation gain, but a total loss of 526 feet!

This race is so much fun because you can push well under 6 minute miles down through the park, all the way to the beach.  Making the turn at the beach was awesome, with huge crowds, but dead wind and 75/80 degree weather.  Things started heating up and half way through the 3 mile out leg on Great Highway.  Luckily they added aid stations from last year, and drank some water and dumped cups on my head to keep cool.  Was running with triathlon-great Tim Sheeper for most of the race which was exciting and saw my announcer friend Eric Gilsenan who gave a great shout too, thanks!

Seeing Mark and Brooke holding pace and another Track friend Lee blazing back on the Great Highway, I hit the turnaround following a little bit behind.  Making the turn, I try to hold back my excitement, because last year there was just amazing headwinds coming back at us, and this year nothing, well until a quarter mile down the road where it turns a little.  Not nearly as bad, but with my height, it takes a lot out.  Some motivation came as I saw my track coach Tom coming up on my heels pushing is kid in a running stroller!  He's fast, but if he ever caught me pushing his kid, I'd never hear the end of it.

Pushing for that 1:20 finish was my motivation, and seeing latching onto whomever was in front of my and trying to reel them in, got a few of them too!  I heard a ton of cheers from my SF Tri friends on their way out, so thanks.  I was pretty much in a daze at that point, so I'm not sure who they were, but it kept me going strong.

Around a mile left, and the tank started to empty.  At about 2 miles left I saw it was going to be close with the quarter mile uphill at the end of the race, so a few of us ramped up the pace to try for it.  Making the turn to the uphill, there was not response from the legs and I knew it would be a mind war to keep my legs going.  The race clock comes into view and its at 1:20:30 and I willed my body as much as I could to get there before it turns over to 1:21, but sprinting an uphill at mile 13.1 is not fun.  Finally get there with 2 seconds to spare-1:20:58-and I get to celebrate my PR with a Payday my girlfriend brought me as a surprise to the finish line!

Going back to my goals post from the New Year, this falls into the "Half Field" improvement metric I created.  I finished Kaiser at 105'th place last year, and 52nd place last year was1:20:17.  Finishing 41st overall this year would show a better improvement, but the 3% improvement is great considering the hot conditions, so I'll take it.

Hopefully the pace was a little erratic from the GPS bouncing around in the park, but the last part of the race was a mind game with me just trying to hold on.

One very sad note was something I didn't realize happen until I got home.  With un-seasonably warm weather, quite a few people had to be treated and someone collapsed near the finish line and passed away.  It turns out there wasn't any medical staff around the finish line either which is a tragedy.  You always want to feel safe in a race, and that if a catastrophe happens, you will be taken care of.  I hope race directors heed this incident and make sure they have all their preparations taken care for future races.  My heart sank when I heard this as it was someone who was trying to improve their health, and fell victim to circumstances out of their control.

Epic day in the rain! Self imposed Half Iron workout

Saturday was a day of "fun" that has left me worked!  After being inspired by another blog I read this week, I decided it was a good idea to change up a few things and see where I was in my training.  A full day of swim bike run was in my future, and I was pretty excited to get it done.

The workout consisted of all the Half Iron distances, but broken up with a bit of a break, so its not like a full race.  Swim at Koret, bike to the lagoon between Stinson and Bolinas, then 13 miles around SF.  When I planned this it was 60 and sunny in SF with decent weather projected for the weekend.  Man do our weather people suck!

Woke up, coffee, banana, muffin, news, all the normal Saturday, pre-workout stuff and off to the pool with Dan.  We were going to swim for 30 minutes since we were on a little crunch for time with our other buddy Tim meeting us for the ride.  Broke out the swim into 4 x 400 meters, not quite the 1.2, but acceptable since I just swam the night before and pushed it a bit.  Got it all in just under the 20 minutes along with some fun with my new camera.

Think I probably need some help?

Out of the pool, feeling good and need to fuel up for the ride.  Two weeks ago we did a similar ride after swimming and I couldn't see straight afterwards from bonking, so banana and Gu were in order to cram in some calories, along with bringing two bars and a mini can of Coke for emergencies.

Tim shows up and were ready to rock!  The sun was shining, so we were hopeful for it to hold up.  On the road, through the Presidio and across GG Bridge we roll through Mill Valley and to Four Corners on our way to Pantoll on Mt. Tam.  The fog is rolling in and wheels are not holding very well, so the amazing downhills are becoming treacherous, and the hands are taking a beating from braking and pressure.

Cruising through Stinson Beach, freezing from riding through mist on our way down Tam we stop off at theStinson Beach Market for some coffee and tri-munchies.

Cliff Mojo and coffee hit the spot today.
The younger, hung over crowd opted for some Odwalla.

Time for some speed, racing along Bolinas Lagoon!  This is my favorite spot of the ride as its flat, fast and meandering turns to keep it interesting.  Nothing like ripping along the road at 25 mph in aero, dragging my friends along in my draft.  Probably was a bit overanxious, because we turned around and Dan jumped on the gas for the way back and I could get on his wheel and was forced to push to keep the gap the whole way back.

The rest of the ride was us battling the oncoming storm, soaking and hauling back up over the hill on Hwy 1 to the city.  Making good time though, and the legs were responding to the final climbs.  Bike: 3:21:53
Couldn't see across the bay the mist was so bad.
55 Miles, but a ton of climbing.
Total gain of 5647 ft, much more than planned thanks to Dan's late course change.

Once back to the house I left a trail of drenched clothes as I changed and stood in front of my heater for a few minutes to heat up.  Fueling up with some cherries, a banana and cashews, time to put my feet up for 20 minutes and get ready for the run.

The rain stopped, and it was just overcast, so great improvements to my motivation and I'm out the door cruising at 7-7:30 pace.  Down through the Presidio again, to Hoppers hands at Fort Point and then towards the city along Crissy Fields and Marina Green.  These are amazing spots to get to train, and if you ever visit SF I recommend cruising through.  Still feeling good cresting the hill on the way to Aquatic Park and then I make the turn back to head home and all the energy begins to drain away.  8 miles of great running and now 5 feeling like crap.  It wasn't lack of fuel, just lack of overall fitness and ability to respond.  I like to think if it was a race I would have pushed through, but today it just wan't there.  Trudging back home at 8-8:30 miles and the rain starts back up, ugh. Run: 1:45:24
12.75 miles and 1000 feet of climbing.

Get home, Muscle Milk immediately and nearly pass out on the couch and catch up on my 30 Rock while trying to unsuccessfully feed myself.  Appetite was not there surprisingly.  Usually I'm off to Safeway to binge on whatever (everything) looks appetizing in their prepared food section, but no go, very strange.

Great day and all in all and I have to thank Dan and Tim for getting out there with me to keep me honest.  Looking for a great Kaiser Half next weekend, and an even better Oceanside.

Late New Year's Resolution

I'm two weeks into my a late New Year's Resolution of bringing my lunch to work and its has been going well so far.  In looking at my finances, and the "extravagance" of the triathlete lifestyle (expensive equipment purchases), there were some cuts to the rest of my life that had to be made.

Most everyone could see from my Mayorships at multiple Subways around town, it was my lunch of choice.  They had some great food for a $5.00 footlong.  Two things happened in the New Year.

#1 - They discontinued their loyalty program.  Getting a free lunch for every 10-12 stops was a great motivator, but no more.
#2 - The $5.00 footlong is becoming less and less of an attractive option as they reduced the number of sandwiches they offer.

I decided to adjust my lunch from the $7.00 meal at Subway of a Sandwich, pack of apples, and drink, to making my own and try to save money and remove a little processed food.  This $35.00 a week could turn into a new wetsuit and a few pounds!

My goal was to still have the right amount of food to keep me going, but alter it to be a little healthier as I'm sure Subway hits their food with some preservatives, as well as highly processed flour and wheat in their bread.

Lunch would now consist of:
- Sandwich - Salami, turkey slices, sliced cheese, BBQ sauce - 450 calories
- Mini carrots - 70 calories
- Banana - 60 Calories
- Nuts - 80 Calories
Total - 660 Calories

This has seemed to fill me up as much as the larger portion of around 900 calories the Subway meal had, and I've been feeling better in the afternoon as well, probably from the reduced sugar intake in my Hi-C/Sprite combo out of the soda fountain.

My two week purchases for groceries is as follows.
- Bread - $4.00
- Lunch Meats - $11.00
- Carrots - $7.00
- Mango - $6.00
- Bananas - $5.00
- Nuts - $5.00
Total - $38.00
Two weeks at Subway - $70.00

I've nearly cut my food budget in half and all for about 10 minutes of prep time a day.  Not only that, I hang out in a park near my office now and don't have to drive to get food, saving gas, and I can say my life is a fraction more "Green" than it was last year.

Next step is trying to figure out how to do dinner.  My biggest obstacle with that is when I get home, there is no way I'm waiting to cook something as I'm usually about the go all Hulk from hunger anger.

Racing Budget

So, after some soul searching, and fun accounting of income and my expenses this year I have come to conclusion that I couldn't afford the new race wheels (Zipp 808's with a power meter) without putting the rest of my life in great peril.  And while my life isn't extravagant by any means, there is no way I would be happy cutting back on the few joys I have in life, so its time to sell stuff on eBay!

I recently sold my arcade machines (out of necessity or my friends storing it would have killed me) and got some "fun" money, but now I need some serious cash so I have to up the ante, along with upping the loss of sentimental value.  Comics were a huge hobby of mine growing up.  My friends and I would go to shows as kids (not sure if I can put going to Comic Con at 24 years old in that group) and grab up everything we could.

Coincidentally Iron Man is my favorite since I was a kid.  Its going to take a lot to get me to sell my Tales of Suspense 39, or Ironman #1, but the rest are up for grabs on eBay coming soon!

Other favorites are the X-Men, Spiderman, Avengers, and Captain America.  I just unloaded the 1st appearance of Juggernaut last night, so things are rolling along great so far.  Check out the latest batch of auctions I have going below.

There are always things you can do without to get you prepared for your goals.  Comics were a big part of my life a ways back and its only fitting that they can now help me with what is important to me now!

Ironman-Tales of Suspense 57-1st Hawkeye
Action Comics 254-1st Bizarro with Superman
Origin #1-6 Wolverine's Story
X-Men #14-First appearance of the Sentinels
Secret Wars #1-12 Epic mini-series bringing all the big Marvel Universe characters together. Includes the origin of Spiderman's black suit.
Before anyone really comments, I know, I'm a huge dork, but most of us are, some just hide it better.
